Background information and answers to common questions about midwife care – summarised clearly and simply.
Travel allowance: how far may the journey be?
Looking for a midwife for postnatal care but living a little further out? The following notes summarise the key rules on travel allowance (Wegegeld).
Statutory insurance
Journeys up to 25 kilometres
For people with statutory health insurance, the travel allowance is generally covered for a one-way distance of up to 25 kilometres.
Exceptions
If you live further away
In certain exceptional cases, the travel allowance can also be billed for a longer one-way distance of up to 50 kilometres – for example:
- if no other midwife is available,
- or in the case of a substitution.
The requirements for billing the longer distance must be met and justified accordingly.
Private insurance
As a privately insured person
As a privately insured person, you can also make use of midwife care. Coverage depends on your individual insurance contract and tariff. Please clarify with your private health insurer before the care begins which services and travel costs are covered.
Service area
Not sure whether you live within the area?
Simply send me your postal code or your place of residence – together we can then check whether care is possible.
